Polar Expedition Training

Greenland's Icecap and coastal sea ice offer the very best environments for people who are serious about proper preparation for North Pole and South Pole expeditions.  Easily accessible from both Europe and North America, a training expedition undertaken here is both a cost-effective and key component in the run-up to your main expedition.  GES provides full support for expeditions training independently in Greenland, whilst also providing full packages including Guiding.  Within our guiding team, we have worked for many years at high latitude, as well as visiting both Poles.  Over the years, our balanced and innovative training has successfully prepared teams that have gone on to reach both extremes of the Earth.  We look forwards to assisting in making your own expedition a success.

Independent Expedition Training Support
For those teams who do not require the services of a Guide, GES can assist in all aspects of your Greenland training trip, from initial planning and location selection, to flight tickets, in-country logistics, supplies (food & fuel), accommodation and equipment hire.  Please click here to read more about our services.  We would also be happy to discuss your plans- please contact us here.

From our base in Arctic East Greenland, we have easy access to both the Icecap (the second largest in the World after Antarctica) and the sea ice that surrounds the coast.  In terms of maximising all that you can do to make a polar expedition a success, there are a number of factors that need to be focused upon.  On our training packages, particular emphasis is placed upon the following:

  • Daily Systems  A systematic approach to the challenges of Polar expeditions is essential.  The big question is upon which system do you rely?  The answer must be your own.  Each polar veteren has their own routines hard won over long expeditions and often tends to strongly advocate them.  On your training trip, we aim to present you with the options, together with our own tried-and tested systems, so that you can find what personally suits best.   These systems form the structure of an expedition, from personal admin, to tent routines and breakdown of the travelling day.
  • Technique  Skiing, sled pulling, kiting, erecting tents- there are many skills to be perfected for a polar expedition.  We offer practical tips and feedback to get you up to speed.
  • Equipment  There are few environments or activities that so thoroughly test and punish gear.  However long or committing your expedition, the right choice of equipment is essential.  We advise on what works best for us whilst also providing the means to test all the systems that you are thinking of using.  Practical and realistic tests of the equipment in Greenland make all the difference when you're out on the major expedition.
  • Physical and Mental Conditioning  When eating an elephant....  Polar expeditions are about the long haul; distances are big and the only way to achieve them, is one step at a time.  With this in mind, your physical conditioning wants to be more of the long distance runner than the sprinter.  Similarly, mentally, an expedition is much more enjoyable and successful when you can focus on the journey a step at a time, giving what it takes to go with or overcome the challenges of each moment.  Ultimately an iron resolve together with a solid motivation and sense of humour will take you a long way!  We will look at all these issues in Greenland.

Kiting Training
Greenland's Icecap is acknowledged as perhaps the ultimate venue for ski sailing and kiting; a relatively good surface tied to steady winds has led to some remarkable expeditions and offers the perfect place to prepare for the South, as well as ends to a means itself.  We offer logistical expedition support and guiding on the Icecap.  Please contact us for more details.
